ROSS’S HAUNT: BETSY ROSS HOUSE

PHILADELPHIA, MA—When the former team from Ghost Hunters on Syfy visited the Betsy Ross House in 2009, they completely overlooked the possibility Ross may not have actually crafted the first American flag. The crew did, however, investigate the reported hauntings that have spooked the house museum’s staff for years.

Lisa Acker Moulder, the organization’s executive director, met with Grant Wilson and Jason Hawes from The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) outside of the property and talked about the various ghostly reports from her staff that included disembodied voices and what felt like a phantom hand touching their shoulder.

“I’ve heard lots of stories particularly from other directors,” Moulder said, pointing to the museum. “This is the original house. We believe Betsy lived here between 1773 and 1775. It was during that time that she made the first American flag.”

Wilson joked about the size of the building. “That was a huge flag to make in that little house,” he said as the trio walked to Ross’s gravesite outside of the property. “It was,” Moulder responded. “And you can see her remains right here along with her third husband.”

In addition to the historical significance associated with Ross’s flag, Moulder explained there was a shooting in the basement of the museum’s gift shop in the 1980s. “There was a scuffle between a couple of security guards,” Moulder explained. “One of the security guards shot the other one three times and he left him overnight to die.”

When asked if her employees experienced paranormal activity in the gift shop, Moulder nodded. “Some voices have been heard in the basement,” she said. “Right above our cash registers is our loft space. That is where we keep the gift shop’s backstock. It’s loaded with boxes. A couple of weeks ago our staff heard boxes being moved up there when there was nobody there.”

Saundra McDowell, a tour guide at the Betsy Ross House, recounted her experience with a shadow figure near the room where Ross supposedly met the flag committee. “I was sitting in the parlor and two dark shadows came by me,” McDowell explained. “It felt like a presence. It just frightened me and it just kind of went by.”

Moulder confirmed visitors to the museum have heard voices in the basement area of the Betsy Ross House. She then escorted the Ghost Hunters team to her office on the top floor of the museum, adding that the executive director’s office is notoriously creepy.

“Our founder lived in this house until he died at the age of seventy-six. He actually died in this room from a stroke,” Moulder said. “Some of the former directors have experienced things in this room. My predecessor was working late one night and was the only one on site and she was sitting at the computer. She felt a hand grasp her shoulder. The director before her was so freaked out about something that she climbed out of the window and onto the flagpole.”

When Wilson asked if she had any idea why the previous director was so scared, Moulder said she didn’t know.
